PROFINET

An open industrial communication standard based on Ethernet, providing real-time data exchange between controllers and field devices.

What is PROFINET?

PROFINET (Process Field Network) is an industrial communication standard developed by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). It uses Ethernet infrastructure to transmit process, diagnostic and configuration data between PLCs, drives, sensors and other automation devices.

The standard offers three performance classes. PROFINET RT (Real-Time) provides deterministic communication with cycle times in the millisecond range, sufficient for most factory automation applications. PROFINET IRT (Isochronous Real-Time) guarantees sub-1 ms cycle times and is used in applications requiring precise synchronisation, such as servo drive control. PROFINET CBA (Component Based Automation) enables communication between automation modules at the plant level.

PROFINET is the dominant protocol in European industrial automation, particularly in the automotive, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors. It also supports integration with PROFIBUS and IO-Link networks.

Why does it matter?

Because PROFINET runs on standard Ethernet, it inherits both its benefits (scalability, bandwidth) and its risks. An attacker who gains access to the industrial network can intercept PROFINET frames, inject false process data or disrupt controller-to-controller communication. OT network segmentation, traffic monitoring and implementing security zones in line with IEC 62443 are essential in PROFINET environments.
